Parasympathetic Cell Column
The parasympathetic components of CN III, VII and IX can be categorised into preganglionic parasympathetic neurones and postganglionic parasympathetic neurones.
The parasympathetic cell column contains the preganglionic neurones the contribute parasympathetic fibres to CN III, VII and IX. Principally, these neurones are the Edinger-Westphal nucleus and the superior and inferior salivatory nuclei (figure 5).

Edinger-Westphal Nucleus
The Edinger-Westphal nucleus is located anteriorly within the periaqueductal grey matter of the midbrain and contributes parasympathetic fibres to CN III: oculomotor nerve.
Superior and Inferior Salivatory Nuclei
The superior and inferior salivatory nuclei are located within the pontine tegmentum.
- The preganglionic superior salivatory nucleus contributes parasympathetic fibres to CN VII: facial nerve.
- The preganglionic inferior salivatory nucleus contributes parasympathetic fibres to CN IX: glossopharyngeal nerve.
